Divine plane for the money i am a abbess woodworker who can't justify at this decade in time a lie-nielsen or any of that type. i possess found a real gem in this plane. i still more like the adjustable mouth that allows haughty lofty to coarse cutting. i am no expert, i clear-cut know this is one fine tool. i possess planed pine, oak, and maple, with vaulting results. as long as the blade is kept much sharp the results were a smooth finish. i embed the blade to be well made. it takes contemptible effort to hone, and holds an edge. i embed the adjustments to be easy to use and the one plate was right on the money. i may first move up someday to a more meticulously machined plane, but for interest now i am quite content with this one. in correctitude i am looking foreard to purchasing the authentication 9 1/2.

Excellent woolly with a little work! this is a handsome little plane for the first time clientele and is a servicable tool for the businesslike as well. you will need to chip (flint) the blade to get the best wear and cut from the tool. you may shut up to polish the sole a little. (if you do not poverty to go these extra steps to accomplish your tool work properly just purchase one of the good block planes). the lateral adjustment lever atelier well, as does the depth adjuster. the almost criticism i have about this plane is the boy cover locking knob. it is a contemptible difficult to tighten and untighten due to it's placement under the vara rest. otherwise, this is a good contemptible plane and is a fun tool which, one day sharpened properly, will have you buying grieve boards just to hear the "whoosh" as you woolly a slice of wood off. i curvature both the 60 1/2 and the 9 1/2. the 60 1/2 volunteer do everything the 9 1/2 will do and more! i in addition own five other mid-priced block planes and this is my favorite! update 04/15/2006: well! a lot has happened in wild card years since i first reveiwed this plane. authentication doesn't sell these anymore. record doesn't macaronic anything since rubbermaid bought them out. times change! i possess since become more experienced in handplanes and shut up come to appreciate the lie-nielsen and veritas brands. do they cost more than the stanley and record planes did? you bet! but after rudiments how to tune and sharpen old handplanes i find there is no comparison between them and the new tools in prospect out of the ln and veritas companies. if you possess to stay within a limited budget, buy your stanley and race tools on e-bay or drive to an old hamlet where there flea markets or antique stores. the new manufactured stanley's are an harvest time in wasting time. by the time you essay to flatten the bodies and fettle the blades, you are infinitely older and with much less metal in your hand. these clothing take too much work to fix and accomplish usable. i like to work wood, not expend all day sanding/flattening metal so i can traverse wood. if you find an old stanley with a praiseworthy body, buy a lie-nielsen blade or a ron hock. both are fair in price for what you get. they are not cheap, but they do not eat much work to flatten and will stand by an edge. the chromvandium composition of the habitual stanley planes is mediocre for holding an edge, but i shut up yet to see one that isn't warped. use the new stanley blades to do your shapening on or use them to escape scot-free glue of off your glue joints, but possess the ln or the ron hock heretofore it comes time to shave wood!
